Forwarding email to an external email address

Hello all,
I am new to Helpspot and am trying to figure out why emails that I attempt to forward to external email addresses are not arriving.
I am clicking “External,” “Add To,” entering a full email address, “Add,” then “Update and Close.”
Where am I going wrong?
